I've been searching for ages for a solution to much the same problem - I was trying to write a preg_replace that would do much the same thing - excluding anchor text. I came to the conclusion it's impossible! But... seperate preg_ calls - screen anchor-text keywords, create links, unscreeen - why didn't I think of that!
