PreFormatter: Cleaning text before it goes into the database

OK, from the discussion on the PseudoFormatters page, I suggested expanding it to educate text going into the database, adding correct typographic entities and so on. Here are my modifications:

preformat.php goes in /formatters. I think this was originally from Wacko, but it may have been some Wakka mod.
<?php
define("PREREGEXP", "/(::(\S)?::|&(?![#A-Za-z0-9]+;))/");
if (!class_exists("preformatter"))
{
class preformatter {
    var $object;
    function preformatter( &$object )
    {
        $this->object = &$object;
    }

    function precallback($things)
    {
        $wakka = &$this->object;

        $thing = $things[1];

        if ($thing=="::::")
        {
          return "&mdash;[".$wakka->GetUserName()."] ";
        }
        if ($thing=="::@::")
        {
          return "&mdash;[".$wakka->GetUserName()." @ ".date("d M Y H:i T")."] ";
        }
        else if ($thing=="::+::")
        {
          return date("d M Y H:i T");
        }
        else if (preg_match("/&(?![#A-Za-z0-9]+;)/", $thing, $matches)) //encode all ampersands not in entities
        {
          return "&amp;";
        }
        return $thing;
    }
}
}
$parser = new preformatter(&$this);
$text = preg_replace_callback(PREREGEXP, array( &$parser, "precallback"), $text);
$text = $this->Format($text, "smartypants",1);
print($text);
?>

IMPORTANT: I modified Format() in the main wikka class to allow parameters to be passed to the formatter (used to educate paragraphs in my SemanticMarkup), see that page for how to do it (simply add a variable to the Format() function, nothing major).

The save page function in the main wikka class needs to pass body to this formatter:
function SavePage($tag, $body, $note, $comment_on = "")
    {
        //preformat the page
        $body = $this->Format($body, "preformat");

handlers/page/edit.php needs to be changed too so the user doesn't get confused with entities everywhere; passing -1 to smartypants means it strips out all entities back to ascii characters:
// fetch fields
if (!$previous = $_POST["previous"]) $previous = $this->page["id"];
if (!$body) $body = $this->page["body"];
$body = preg_replace("/^[ ]{4}/m", "\t", $body);
$body = $this->Format($body, "smartypants", -1);

Because I replace all &'s to stop validation issues including URL's, I use a function to ensure that all URL's are encoded properly added into the main wikka.php:
function CleanURL($url) {
    $url = str_replace("&amp;","&",$url);
    $url = rawurlencode($url);
    $url = str_replace("%3A",":",$url);
    $url = str_replace("%2F","/",$url);
    return $url;
}

OK, and finally the modified smartypants itself sites in /formatters. I have changed it's tag discovery to stop matching inside "" {{ and %% - this ensures no problems with code or actions.

#
#   Returns:    The string, with each instance of "--" translated to

#               entries written before SmartyPants 1.1, back when "--" was

#               common than en-dashes, and so it sort of makes sense that
#               the shortcut should be shorter to type. (Thanks to Aaron
#               Swartz for the idea.)

PHP SmartyPants
===============

Description
-----------

This is a PHP translation of the original SmartyPants quote educator written in
Perl by John Gruber.

SmartyPants is a web publishing utility that translates plain ASCII
punctuation characters into "smart" typographic punctuation HTML
entities. SmartyPants can perform the following transformations:

*   Straight quotes (`"` and `'`) into "curly" quote HTML entities
*   Backticks-style quotes (` ``like this'' `) into "curly" quote HTML
    entities
*   Dashes (`--` and `---`) into en- and em-dash entities
*   Three consecutive dots (`...`) into an ellipsis entity

SmartyPants does not modify characters within `<pre>`, `<code>`, `<kbd>`,
`<script>`, or `<math>` tag blocks. Typically, these tags are used to
display text where smart quotes and other "smart punctuation" would not
be appropriate, such as source code or example markup.

### Backslash Escapes ###

If you need to use literal straight quotes (or plain hyphens and
periods), SmartyPants accepts the following backslash escape sequences
to force non-smart punctuation. It does so by transforming the escape
sequence into a decimal-encoded HTML entity:

    Escape  Value  Character
    ------  -----  ---------
      \\    &#92;    \
      \"    &#34;    "
      \'    &#39;    '
      \.    &#46;    .
      \-    &#45;    -
      \`    &#96;    `

This is useful, for example, when you want to use straight quotes as
foot and inch marks: 6'2" tall; a 17" iMac.

Bugs
----

To file bug reports or feature requests (other than topics listed in the
Caveats section above) please send email to:

<michel.fortin@michelf.com>

If the bug involves quotes being curled the wrong way, please send example
text to illustrate.

### Algorithmic Shortcomings ###

One situation in which quotes will get curled the wrong way is when
apostrophes are used at the start of leading contractions. For example:

    'Twas the night before Christmas.

In the case above, SmartyPants will turn the apostrophe into an opening
single-quote, when in fact it should be a closing one. I don't think
this problem can be solved in the general case -- every word processor
I've tried gets this wrong as well. In such cases, it's best to use the
proper HTML entity for closing single-quotes (`&#8217;`) by hand.
