Found Wikka when looking for a way to organise my PhD data/notes. Have it on a USB memory stick so I can take it with me, not have to carry notebook computer around all the time, and have a convenient way of accessing it all.
Not sure of the most efficient way of backing it up. So far I've been just saving it to a couple of other locations. I tried a file sync programme to synchronise between notebook and memory stick but didn't seem to do the job. So I'm working off the stick and copying over to notebook and a web server to back up. Would be more convenient to synchronise though I think.

You might also want to check out wikindx (http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/wikindx)...don't know if it will offer you the portability you seek, but it's specifically for the kind of things you're doing (I'm using it in my own EdD work...)
