Home Page Layout

Some suggestions to improve the visual readability of our homepage.

Adding a download box

To give more visibility to the main download link, much as other sites do (Skype, FireFox, WordPress, OpenOffice etc..)

(Click on the TestHomePageN link to see the box in context)

humm, all the pictures/icons used in examples TestHomePage, TestHomePage2, TestHomePage3 have transparency that is not correctly displayed on IE.

PNG - IE does not correctly handle the alpha channel transparency. Woudl be easy enough to convert all to GIFs.

Another matter: the TestHomePage2 version has white background only for the download link - that looks bad on a colored background. That's with my own stylesheet - it should be tested with a variety (black and its variants, for instance.

Also when you decrease the font in the browser, the icon may get cut off - the link should have a min-height equal to the height of the icon.

The watermark variant is nice! The arrow gets cut of "artistically" with very small font sizes but is still recognizable as an arrow.

IE can handle PNG with alpha channel through a filter. But is it necessary?

For my part, I prefer TestHomePage4 :)

We like to avoid browser-specific code - so no IE filters. GIF would work, so why bother? It's easy to convert.

I prefer TestHomePage3 (maybe a slightly lighter background); #4 second choice. :)

Yep, GIF's would do the job. And no, I'm not convinced by any of the above examples ;)

I like #1 and #3, personally. The blue down-arrow image stands out pretty well in #1. The darker background and simpler graphic in #3 also stands out pretty well.

Hi Jason, this is actually an old discussion. The new homepage layout will be completely rewritten as soon as 1.1.7 is out.
