What ship is right for you?
As soon as you can you want to get out of the rookie ship and into a mining frigate this will be your bread and butter your steady income on your path to becoming a successful miner.
Miner Frigates by Race.
Gallente - Navitas with Gallente Frigate V = +25% cargo. +100% yield, -60% laser cap
Caldari - Bantam with Caldari Frigate V = +25% cargo, +100% laser yield, -60% laser cap
Minmatar - Burst with Minmatar Frigate V = +25% cargo. +100% yield, -60% laser cap
Amarr - Tormentor with Amarr Frigate V = +25% cargo. +100% yield, -60% laser cap
Why Upgrade to Cruiser?
You'll want to get a cruiser because A. they can hold more cargo, more ore! and B. you can fit more mining lasers, more ore! and C. they can take alot more damage than a frigate so they are more suitable for lower security space, you can also run missions much easier in a cruiser if you ever want to take a break from mining.
Miner Cruisers by Race.
Gallente - Vexor with Gallente Cruiser V = +50% Minerdrone yield
Caldari - Osprey with Caldari Cruiser V = +100% Laser yield
Minmatar - Scythe with Minmatar Cruiser V = +100% Laser yield
Amarr - Arbitrator with Amarr Cruiser V = +50% Minerdrone yield
Mining Barges & Exhumers
The natural progression of the miner leads here now I'm going to briefly go over what makes them special, they are special because you can fit strip miners and ice harvesters, they have nice cargo capacity and are the ideal mining vessel with the Covetor being the top Barge and Hulk being the top Exhumer these are for the serious miners to work towards.
Tools that help the miner.
Miner drones will increase your yield. Then there is mining upgrades which give +5% extra yield each and you can also get implants but they're really quite expensive. Ore specific crystals with tech II strip miner increase yields too these are for Barges and Exhumers.
Skills that help the miner.
Drone Interfacing gives +20% drone mining yield per level.
Mining drone operation gives +5% drone mining yield per level.
Astrogeology gives +5% yield per level.
Mining gives +5% yield per level.
Mining foreman gives +2% yield per level while in fleet mode as commander.
Where to mine and what to mine.
Now about the different types of ore and where to find it.
1.0 and 0.8-0.9
You probably want to stay between 1.0 and 0.8 because of the lack NPC Pirates here, you will find only Veldspar and Scordite in 1.0 these ores are common throughout the whole galaxy though. Then in 0.8 and 0.9 depending on the area you are mining in you will find Plagioclase in Minmatar/Gallente and Pyroxeres in Caldari/Amarr.
0.5-0.7
In 0.5 to 0.7 you will find Omber in Minmatar/Gallente, Kernite in Amarr and Plagioclase in Caldari, in these areas you will also find the basic ores from higher sec and NPC Pirates so come prepared to shield tank and have some drones or a friend in a combat vessel.
0.0-0.4
This area is far too dangerous for a Rookie Miner. if you want to mine in these areas gang up with other miners and have protection. Now the ore you will expect to find here 0.3-0.4 Jaspet in Gallente/Amarr and Kernite in Minmatar/Caldari then 0.0-0.1 Hedbergite in Caldari/Minmitar and Hemorphite in Gallente/Amarr.

There is actually a whole other hiiden set of levels below 0.0 that have even rarer ore within I don't know much about this unfortunatly but I thought I would include this limited info so you can do a little research if you are interested.
Making ISK as a Miner
You can either sell it raw or refine it. As a rookie your refine skills probably won't be great so I suggest mining Scordite to sell raw, Condensed is +5% and Massive is +10% check market info to find the station giving the best price and SELL SELL SELL! Then there is Refining now you will want to get the skills Refining V, Refinery Efficiency V and the Ore Specific Reprocessing Skill V but you can get a perfect refine with these skils at lower level in a 50% refinery and also 0% refine tax with a standing of 6.7 with the corporation. Now the best thing for a rookie miner to refine is Plagioclase and Pyroxeres so train up those Ore refine skills and make lots of isk! Have Fun and Fly Safe!
