- Boston Review — Evgeny Morozov: Edit This Page
Some might disagree. As long as the information is available online, Wikipedia, they say, will eventually organize it according to the dictates of good judgment. But despite all of the notoriety guidelines clogging the site, judgment is lacking in the world of Wikipedia. There is virtually no sense of relative importance: improving an article about a prominent historical figure is as important as writing the biography of a soap opera character, as long as both are deemed notable. One does not have to be a natural-born elitist to see that relying on this simplistic binary will inevitably keep the focus on the frivolous, which is never in short supply.
- You live, you learn – the PHP way | Reinhold Weber
Sometimes, reflecting on mistakes from the past – you wish you knew then what you know now. Here are a few of my PHP developer truths, learned the hard way by being young, stubborn and most of the times an arrogant prick, refusing to accept that others may actually know better.

- Particletree » PHP Quick Profiler
we invested some time creating something we’ve called the PHP Quick Profiler—we call it PQP for short. It’s a small tool (think Firebug for PHP) to provide profiling and debugging related information to developers without needing them to add a lot of programmatic overhead to their code. Now, we only need to toggle one config setting to true and our reviewers have access to an automated tool to help create a faster and more consistent review experience. Since anyone can use it, PQP also gives the initial developer an idea of where their code stands before the review.

- Google Begins Fixing Usenet Archive | Epicenter | Wired.com
Google was widely hailed as heroic in late 2001 when it rescued two decades of orphaned Usenet posts and put them in Google Groups. But in the years since, meaningful access to the archive became all but impossible as search and indexing bugs proliferated on the site, a situation that was only passingly acknowledged by Google until Wednesday night.
Searching or browsing a range of dates is still broken, but the company says it has begun working in earnest on making Google Groups usable again. “We’re aware of the larger issues with Groups search, and we’ll continue to work on improving the product,” said spokesman Jason Freidenfelds, in a follow-up e-mail.
- Google’s Abandoned Library of 700 Million Titles (UPDATED) | Epicenter | Wired.com
Google’s search engine and other tools are the company’s strongest, if unstated, argument in favor of the Google Books Settlement, which would give the internet the largest and most comprehensive library in history, at the cost of granting Google a de facto monopoly. It’s hard to imagine any company better equipped to scan, catalog and index millions of books than Google.
But a few geeks with long memories remember the last time Google assembled a giant library that promised to rescue orphaned content for future generations. And the tattered remnants of that online archive are a cautionary tale in what happens when Google simply loses interest.
In the end, then, the rusting shell of Google Groups is a reminder that Google is an advertising company — not a modern-day Library of Alexandria.
- Textarea Scrolling - Sheep Wiki
When I read a long page in a wiki, and I want to correct something in it, I have scroll to the bottom, click "edit", find the right spot in the editor, correct it, save, then find the place again and continue reading. Please, make it so that I can click anywhere on the page, and the editor will come up scrolled to that spot. Thank you. Sounds pretty basic, doesn't it? Unfortunately, the canonical response to such a request is "this is not possible". Why not? Thousands of wiki users are doing it each time they edit a page, if they can do it, why can't the computer do it? There is a number of difficult problems…

Me, myself & I
I am a student of social science at the university of Goettingen, Germany.
My problem
After years of working with various computers and surfing the internet, I have a huge collection of emails, saved webpages, bookmarks, word-documents, other documents adresses in local and web adressbooks, zip files etc. Not to mention tons of paper , notices etc. And I have searched years for a way to organize these informations, which means a) finding the things i am searching for and b) establishing relationships between them.

The solution
After testing some wikkas i finally moved to wikka. I made some little hacks to improve configurability, but mainly I am contributing to
WikkaDocumentation.
Since february 2005 i am a member of the
wikka crew, where my topic of interest is mainly the documentation (big surprise, isn't it ;-)
My thoughts about Wikka
Although
WikkaWiki is now a very interesting pice of software, there are always things which could be done better. And because I do not want to talk only, I made some contributions to wikka in the three fields which seem the most important to me:
Documentation
There's no good representation without good documentation :)
The most important part for every project is a good documentation. This occurs to software, too. Not only for developers, but also for administrators and end-users. A documentation is only good if there are no questions remaining after reading it!
Configurability
Since people use wikka for many different purposes, wikka needs a maximum of configurability. My additions to that goal:
- UserRegistration: An admin can choose if registration is disallowed, allowed only if you know a register-code, or allowed for everyone. This option (and the registration code) are stored in the config
- StayingLoggedIn: Let the user choose if he wants to have permanent cookies with his name and password or only a session-based cookie (to be logged out when all browser windows are closed)
- AutomaticUserPageCreation let an admin choose to create the page of a new user after his creation. As a template any wikkapage can be used.
- PageAndCategoryDivisionInACategory seperation of pages and categories in the category action.
- CommentsFormatting allows some (basic) formatting in comments. Problem with backwards compatibility :(
Compatibility
To use Wikka to store informations it is necessary to be as compatible to other programms (and older versions of wikka) as possible. So that wikka becomes no information-oneway, but a "crossing point" ;-) My addition to that goal:
- HandleCsvData is a library which shall contain functions for, well, handling (reading, writing, sorting etc..) data from and to *.csv files
- ShowCsv is the first action using this library. It shows the content of a *.csv file as a html-table.
to be continued...
